The Joke's on ME.
ME. NOT ME.
ME. Hidden, scared, unconnected.
NOT ME. Smiling, capable, phony.
NOT ME. Keeping ME safe.
If I pretend to be ok, am I?
If I play by the rules can I survive?
I know, I'll fool them all.
I'll act in a way that makes NOT ME fit in
Dress in the clothes that fit the character
Marriage, career, family
Following the expected path
While hiding very well, even from ME.
Giving more than I receive
Helping everyone
Gracious, and considerate
I accept their kudos
PERFECT.
They appreciate NOT ME
They think they know ME
They look up to NOT ME
Thinking that it's ME.
I can't keep it up any longer.
I thought I'd fooled 'em all
Except ME
Especially ME.
I never got what I wanted
'Cause I never asked
Was afraid to ask
Was afraid to be ME.
Not perfect.
Not even close.
What a joke!
And the joke's on ME.
